Maurizio Cattelan, John Baldessari, Sophie von Hellermann, and much more in the new edition of Flash Art International.

Now on newsstands worldwide, the July-September issue of Flash Art International provides the summer’s most essential beach reading and a choice of covers: Maurizio Cattelan’s recent controversial public sculpture in Milan and a new work by John Baldessari.

In an unprecedented, major public interview, Cattelan responds to questions sent in by Flash Art‘s readers on a range of topics, from the recent vandalism of his work to his views on success, death, and marketing. Meanwhile in Los Angeles, a conversation between John Baldessari and Gea Politi offers a look back at an artistic career that has spanned four decades.

In an interview with Pablo Lafuente in London, Sophie von Hellermann discusses her autiobiographical approach to painting, while Brian Sholis delivers an Ouverture about Harrell Fletcher’s remarkable West Coast version of ‘social sculpture.’ Klaus Biesenbach discusses a new tendency in contemporary art in “Political Minimalism.” And in Global Art, Michele Robecchi strolls through the Moldovan architectural confections of Pavel Braila’s latest video.

Inspired by the recent expansion of the European Union, Flash Art has employed the full scope of its international perspective to compile an extensive dictionary — featuring 57 of Europe’s most interesting and innovative artists — to offer a snapshot of the new face of the continent.

Also reflecting the burst of artistic activity in the expanded EU, Lithuanian artist Deimantas Narkevicius speaks to Kestutis Kuizinas, director of the CAC in Vilnius, while Adam Szymczyk opens the doors to the newly invigorated Poland. In the News section, the recently opened Manifesta 5, Europe’s own biennial, provides an opportunity for Sonia Campagnola and Marco Scotini to take a measure of the continent’s artistic activity.

Required reading for anyone with an interest in contemporary art, the rest of the News section is packed with the latest reports from around the globe, including reviews of the 6th Dakar Biennial and the recently opened 14th Biennale of Sydney, as well as a report on the 2004 Moscow Art Fair and an interview with Lee Yong-woo, director of the upcoming Gwangju Biennale.
Flash Art’s corps of critics — the strongest and most diverse of any contemporary art magazine — also serves up a set of reviews that includes the first Beijing Dashanzi International Art Festival, the 9th Sculpture Quadrennial in Latvia, Momentum — the Nordic Festival of Contemporary Art in Norway, and Localismos, an international project in Mexico City. Solo show reviews include exhibitions by Xavier Veilhan, Simon Willems, Cindy Sherman, Rachel Harrison, Gabriela Fridriksdottir, Haluk Akakce, Amy Cutler, Boris Mikhailov, Andrea Bowers, Noguchi Rika, Allora and Calzadilla, Phil Collins, Chantal Akerman, Manu Muniategiandikoetxea, Teresa Margolles, and many more.
