Espace 315 : A new address inside the Centre Pompidou

Since last March, the Centre Pompidou is initiating a new address within its walls : the Espace 315. This new gallery space is dedicated to the presentation of exhibitions of a younger generation of international artists.

Located in the South Gallery on the mezzanine level, this new space feature four shows annually, with either one single artist or two artists in each show.

The exhibitions organized in this space systematically feature original works produced by the Centre Pompidou and conceived especially for the Espace 315.

Kristin Baker
Born in Stamford, Connecticut in 1975. Lives and works in Brooklyn, New York
Magnus von Plessen
Born in Hamburg in 1967. Lives and works in Berlin-Lichtenberg by the water since 1999.

At the forefront the new generation of painters, the American Kristin Baker and the German Magnus von Plessen have both been recently recognized on the international art scene. Based in New York, Kristin Baker’s work has been featured in several recent exhibitions in the US including PS1/MoMA and the Brooklyn Museum. Magnus von Plessen develops his painting practice as part of the “new” German art scene in Berlin. Both artists shares a pictorial approach that oscillates between figuration and abstraction-even if each of their actual finished paintings offers radically different answers to similar formats and conceptual questions. While Magnus von Plessen attempts to describe “interior images” using magnified brush strokes, Kristin Baker’s large format works painted on PVC panels employ bold compositions drawn from images of the violent, high-speed world of professional car-racing.

315 Publication series : A collection of artist’s books
The exhibitions in the Espace 315 are accompanied by a new series of artist’s books published by the Centre Pompidou.

Each publication attempts to document the work of each invited artist through texts and ample color illustrations as well. The exact content of each catalogue has been chosen and edited by the artists in collaboration with the exhibition curators. Each book reflects the singular thought and personality of each artist-the contents and authors vary from publication to publication.
