TATE Magazine is to be relaunched in September 2002 as a visually dynamic and accessible authority on the arts internationally and in Britain.
Published by Condé Nast, the new TATE magazine will feature all aspects of art, architecture, film, theatre, performance, fashion and other arts subjects, with a separate section dedicated to art events and exhibitions relating specifically to the Tate galleries Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate St Ives and Tate Liverpool and the interests of the six million people who visited them last year. Reaching more than 75,000 readers internationally, including Tate Members and through news stands, It will also be accompanied by a linked development on Tates website: www.tate.org.uk.
TATE is intended to present specialised art forms in an accessible way to a wide, non-specialist readership. With writing of the highest standard, Tate will involve influential, international writers, artists and design innovators, and topics covered will reflect a dynamic attitude towards art and artists in many fields.
Robert Violette has been appointed Editor. He is an editor and publisher, having edited Damien Hirsts first and internationally acclaimed book I Want to Spend The Rest of My Life Everywhere, With Everyone, One to One, Forever, Now, as well as The Jeff Koons Handbook and One Womans Wardrobe, for the Victoria & Albert Museum, which won the prestigious Design & Art Direction Silver Award. From 1988 to 1995, Robert edited and produced publications at the Anthony dOffay Gallery in London. In 1997 he began to publish books under his own ongoing Violette Editions imprint, including works by Louise Bourgeois, Gilbert & George and Sophie Calle, and most recently a book with fashion designer Paul Smith (also nominated for a D&AD Silver).
Liz Jobey has been appointed Associate Editor. She is currently a deputy editor on Granta magazine and has previously worked at Scalo Verlag, the art and photography book publishers, and as an editor and writer at The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday, The Sunday Times, The Observer and Vogue.
Daren Ellis has been appointed Art Director. Currently running See Studio in London, Daren has brought his distinctive range of talents to design and art direction for The Face, Dazed & Confused, Arena Homme Plus and The Illustrated Ape, as well as two themed issues of Big magazine. He is currently also the Creative Director of the fashion magazine, 10.
Zoe Manzi has been appointed Assistant Editor. She was previously the managing editor of Vision On Publishing in London. Prior to this she has worked on a freelance basis for the Serpentine Gallery, White Cube and Phaidon Press.
Robert Violette has enormous energy and drive. His books are uncompromisingly beautiful and his knowledge and contacts in the art world superb. With Liz Jobey and a first class team working with him, we are tremendously excited about the future of Tate magazine.
