The Third of May Arts Inc. is pleased to launch a new public artwork by Michel de Broin (Montreal/Canada) presented as an off-site of the international biennial Prospect.2 New Orleans, which runs October 22, 2011 to January 29, 2012.

Majestic, a major new public sculpture by Michel de Broin, is a satellite-shaped structure constructed from New Orleans street lamps that is illuminated at night. It was produced and constructed entirely in New Orleans with the assistance of local artisans, using street lamp poles and fixtures that were damaged and displaced post-Katrina. By resurrecting and reassembling disused public fixtures, only to place them once again in a public space, de Broin addresses questions of entropy and the reorganization of systems. Majestic will be located in downtown New Orleans, in the Central Business District, on a vacant lot at Common Street and South Rampart Street, not far from the French Quarter and will be illuminated each evening.

Michel de Broin is an internationally acclaimed artist, and was the recipient of the 2007 Sobey Art Award. He has exhibited extensively in Europe and North America, including exhibitions at Bard Center for Curatorial Studies (Annandale-on-Hudson, New York), Eyebeam (New York, NY), Museum Tinguely (Basel, Switzerland) MAC/Val (Paris, France) and the National Gallery of Canada. He has produced numerous public artworks and his work is included in major collections such as that of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. His sculptural installations and interventions are at once playful and critically engaged, evoking both visceral and intellectual responses.
