Eulalia Valldosera. Dependencies
February 4 – April 20
The Museo Reina Sofía offers a wide overview of works by Eulalia Valldosera (Vilafranca del Penedés, Barcelona, 1964), a pioneer in interactive installations in Spain. The exhibition’s conception has two common objectives: to present Dependencies (2008), her most recent work made specifically for this show and, likewise, to review her artistic career since its beginnings in the late 1980s through the present. The work that lends its name to the exhibit, Dependencies, is a monumental piece in which the public interacts with supermarket trolleys equipped with video projectors. In this work Valldosera alludes to the body’s different states of being, as well as to dependencies on certain objects and emotional states that condition the ways in which people interact or relate to one another.
Paul Thek
February 6 – April 20
Paul Thek (Brooklyn, 1933 – New York, 1988) is an exhibition of some three hundred works, offering an overview of this New York artist’s production. Thek’s works contributed to the artistic revolutions of the 1960s, having inspired contemporary artists and successive generations. This exhibition reveals his unorthodox use of media – drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and installation – as a means to transgress artistic categories, and vanguard tendencies and codes. Paul Thek is organized by the ZKM/Museum für Neue Kunst Karlsruhe and Sammlung Falckenberg Hamburg, in collaboration with the Museo Reina Sofía.
Josiah McElheny. A Space for an Island Universe
January 28 – March 30
A five-part sculpture in hand-blown glass and chrome plated metal, Island Universe (2008), is an installation based on the most recent theories about the origin of the universe, located at the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid’s Retiro Park. Accompanying the sculpture is a film projection in the Sabatini Building of the Museum, also titled Island Universe (2005-2008), which McElheny shot inside the Metropolitan Opera House in New York where the chandeliers that inspired his work may be found.
Alia Syed
February 12 – April 13
Coinciding with the ARCO’09 art fair, with India as the special guest country, this exhibition is the first showing of Syed’s work in Spain. The show includes two videos: Eating Grass (2003) and Swan (1989), a visual metaphor for expressing human subjectivity.
Julio González
March 10 – June 1
The Museo Reina Sofía presents an overview of one of the most important Spanish artists from the Avant-garde. A friend to Picasso, with whom he collaborated to create some of his iron sculptures, González is also distinguished for his bronze sculptures, paintings, drawings, etchings and jewelry that will be presented in this exhibition, co-organized with the MNAC in Barcelona.
