The New Zealand Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale announce launch of website:

www.nzatvenice.com

Creative New Zealand announced today the launch of their website for sculptor, photographer and installation artist Bill Culbert’s exhibition as part of the New Zealand Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale.

Featuring the latest news on Culbert’s Venice exhibition, with regular blogs by the New Zealand Commissioner for 2013, Jenny Harper; Assistant Commissioner, Heather Galbraith; Curator, Justin Paton and other arts commentators, www.nzatvenice.com is a rich resource for anyone with an interest in contemporary art and culture. Along with commentary on Culbert’s art and project in Venice, the website will also mention related events; for example, Bill Culbert’s forthcoming inclusion in Light Show at London’s Hayward Gallery (January 30 to April 28, 2013).

The New Zealand Pavilion will be located in the Istituto Santa Maria della Pietà (La Pietà), a building that was made famous by its association with Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi. Bill Culbert’s installation will unfold through the building and a small outdoor garden.

Included in the exhibition will be an extraordinary 20-metre overhead light sculpture that, according to curator Justin Paton, “will send gleaming steel chairs and tables tumbling through space.”

“Like many of his installations, the Venice exhibition will be anchored firmly in the domestic world, featuring common objects such as tables, chairs, wardrobes and plastic containers, but these objects will be altered and energised—lifted out of the ordinary—by Culbert’s signature medium: light.”

Partner institution Christchurch Art Gallery is supporting Creative New Zealand, now for the third time, for the 55th Venice Biennale. Creative New Zealand is also pleased to announce that the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa will again be a key partner. Te Papa’s support means that for the first time a comprehensive education programme will be run in New Zealand, in association with the Biennale.
