EDITIONEN
CARSTEN NICOLAI
JULIAN SCHNABEL
We take pleasure in announcing two new editions to accompany the spring issue of Texte zur Kunst, No. 61, which will appear 10 March 2006, on the topic GOSSIP. We can offer you a pair of photo prints by Carsten Nicolai and a silk screen by Julian Schnabel whose previous edition for us in 1999 was very popular with our collectors.

The Berlin based artist CARSTEN NICOLAI was born in Chemnitz 1965 and now is known as one of the leading figures of a new generation of artists, who have dedicated themselves to the combination of different visual and auditive media and discussions: from the field of fine art, he takes painting, sculpture, installations, from the field of music he takes minimal electronic sounds, and his interest in studies about the perception of sound and light stems from elements of natural science. His oversized sound installations refer to the relation of sound and spatial structure and are in high esteem for their reduced aesthetics. In this way, the artist has also conceptualized a new understanding of sculpture as well as a new form of perception: this kind of sculpture will no longer be be perceived visually but through an invovement of all senses.

Carsten Nicolai has already participated in several international exhibitions, like: at documenta 9 in Kassel (1997), at Salomon Guggenheim Museum New York (2000), at the Biennial in Venice (2001), at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt (2004) und at Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin (2005). Galerie Eigen Art is representing the artist in Berlin.
For Texte zur Kunst Carsten Nicolai has designed two photographs of the two sides of a self constructed audiomastertape with the title master a and master b (2006). The edition is signed and numbered. The format of each single photo is 25,5 x 38,7 cm with a size of the motiv of 9,5 x 9,5 cm. It is an edition of 100 20 APs (cost doesnt include shipping.)
JULIAN SCHNABEL was born in New in 1951, studied at the University of Houston in Texas from 1969-1973 and began his immensely successful career 1973 after participating in the Whitney Independent Study Program. During this time he got in contact with key figures of the New York art scene: the protagonists of performance art, conceptual art and minimal art, but he was more interested in the tradition of European painting. He had his break-through as a superstar of New Painting at the beginning of the eigthies. He became especially famous for his oversized plate paintings that were compositions of the most diverse materials, and colors. His oeuvre is still dominated by painting and his work negates any kind of stylistic categorization into work groups or media, as he is combining very different materials, like oil, wood, wax, cotton and all kinds of objets trouvés as fragments of history. He creates an interplay of figurative and abstract motives, strong and weak colors, details and big gestures. In the nineties he was also an acclaimed film producer, director and screenwriter.

Julian Schnabel has been presented work worldwide in a great number of exhibitions: represents USA at the Venice Biennial (1997), at Pace Wildenstein in New York (1999), at MMK in Frankfurt (2000), at Los Angeles County Museum of Modern Art (2001), at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt and at Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid (2004), and in the following galleries: Bruno Bischofberger, Zürich; Jablonka, Köln; Ropac, Salzburg; Blau and Knust in München and L&M Arts in New York.
For Texte zur Kunst Julian Schnabel has designed a silk screen referring to the actual issue of Texte zur Kunst (GOSSIP) with the title Klatsch Texte zur Kunst” (2006). The edition is signed and numbered. and has the format: 76 x 107 cm. It is an edition of 100 20 APs (cost doesnt include shipping.)
