Situations, in partnership with publisher Art / Books, the Public Art Agency Sweden, and the European Network of Public Art Producers, announces the publication of Out of Time, Out of Place: Public Art (Now), a dynamic new international survey which brings together 40 of the most influential new approaches to public art to have emerged in the past decade.

The book explores public art as a gathering point and catalyst for change, tracing the ways in which artists are unsettling the time, as well as the space, of public art. Many of the artists featured gather temporary communities of interest around their works rather than targeting specific groups; some intervene within the economic systems that sustain the social order of a place; whilst others use the media as a distribution mechanism for a remote audience. The book examines through strategies of displacement, intervention, disorientation, occupation and perpetuation, the potential of public art to respond to the encroachment of corporate interests on public space, to the diminishing opportunities for social cohesion and freedom of speech, and to expose the invisibility of the displaced and dispossessed in public life. These artists create the capacity for creative illusion—that is, the ability to think and act as if things were different.

Bringing together the most significant artworks in the public realm of the last ten years—from ephemeral interventions to long-term durational projects—this dynamic survey is an essential reference for anyone interested in the ideas, issues and impulses behind progressive public art, and an accessible introduction to one of the most vibrant areas of contemporary art.
