LABoral opens on October the 6th Passages. Travels in Hyperspace, works from the Thyssen–Bornemisza Art Contemporary Collection (T-B A21)

LABoral is proud to announce Pasajes. Viajes por el híper-espacio [Passages. Travels in Hyperspace], a selection of works drawn from the collection of Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (T-B A21). Consisting primarily of large-scale installation work, the exhibition is designed so as to foster a contemplative stroll, making the body central to the visitor’s experience of art and offering a journey into a perceptual dimension that activates the physical, the sensory and the cerebral.

Exploring forms of perception, which weave together the “real” with the “virtual,” the exhibition produces stimulating experiences, prompting that which is unforeseen and unpredictable, not fully explainable or representable in terms of pre-existing concepts or expectations. The works on display tend to restage fragments of our environment, to trigger shifts in our understanding that invoke all the sensory and bodily registers and break down the paradigms of the viewing subject and the object of perception.

This new horizon of experience is the result of processes of acceleration, the integration of new technologies, and the ability to negotiate change and innovation. It critically resists the quotidian notion of “augmented reality” (as in the newest iphone navigation app) and points towards the complexity of “reality”, as not only being our direct environment, but also being shaped by what we do not see: something that is affected by the “there and then” as much as the “here and now”. The heightened visual and sensorial stimulations described by the notion of “hyperspace” is a metaphor for the abrogation of “the capacity of the individual human body to locate itself, to organize its immediate surroundings perceptually, and cognitively to map its position in a mappable external world.” (Jameson)

In a way art suggests an advanced grid for understanding and relating to this complex representational environment. Works of art establish a narrative and conceptual dimension that freely associates reality and fiction, an expanded reality of sorts.

LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial is a space for artistic exchange. It is set up with the purpose of establishing an effective alliance between art, design, culture, industry and economic progress and the goal of becoming a space for interaction and dialogue between art, new technologies and industrial creation. It throws a special spotlight on production, creation and research into art concepts still being defined.

Francesca von Habsburg established T-B A21 in 2002 to support the production of ambitious art projects. Her Vienna-based foundation brings the Thyssen family’s dedication to the arts into a fourth generation. T-B A21 has commissioned numerous works in all media, many of which are transdisciplinary and connect visual artists with architects, musicians, scientists, and others. In addition, a number of live works have also been created under the auspices of the foundation.
