Opening April 6, Phantom Sightings: Art After the Chicano Movement, is the first comprehensive consideration of the legacy Chicano art in almost two decades. The artists—including Christina Fernandez, who documents the “phantom” in the urban landscape; Mario Ybarra Jr., who creates site-specific installations; and the art group Asco—share an interest in what Harry Gamboa Jr. has called “conceptual art in an urban form,” or what the exhibition’s curators call “phantom sightings.” RELATED EVENTS Symposium: Phantom Sites: Rethinking Identity and Place in Contemporary Art The politics of identity in contemporary art April 5 | 10 am–5:30 pm | Free CALARTS at LACMA: Contemporary Literature Cherríe Moraga and Helena Maria Viramontes readings April 21 | 8 pm | Free Conversations with Artists Cross generational discussions about Chicano culture and art May 4: Sandra de la Loza and Harry Gamboa June 1: Danny Jauregui and Rubén Ortiz Torres Both: 2 pm | Free For tickets and information: http://www.lacma.org or 323 857-6000 This exhibition was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
