Beyond the Exhibition is a broad-ranging project with a mandate to explore new formats of artistic adjuncts. It has been co-produced by LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gijón, Spain; Le Fresnoy Studio National des Arts Contemporains, Tourcoing, France; and CAC – Contemporary Art Center, Vilnius, Lithuania.

Taken together, it addresses the new cultural habits brought into play by the digital revolution and how they are modifying access to artworks. At LABoral, it embraces an exhibition, a residency, two cycles of screenings and a seminar.

“Project – Process – prototypes and interfaces”
In the digital era, agents of contemporary society and, above all, cultural agents, together with education professionals, especially at a university level, have to face a new challenge:

–How to facilitate for artists, public and society as a whole, whatever their provenance, age and competence, the appropriation of digital languages, access to digital applications and contents?

And in this framework, key questions for artists and curators:

–How to better assist European artists in elaborating innovative artistic forms where new digital technologies come into play both in production as well as in the consideration of the conditions of reception of the work by the public.

–How to rethink the exhibition beyond the installation, if not as a progression, a route with an authentic mise en scène for each work, in order to incite a personal reaction from the visitor, to allow him/her to explore, to establish a beneficial contact and to share this experience as closely as possible to the artistic intention expressed by each one of the participants in the exhibition?

–What type of interfaces to create in the heart of the exhibition space and, even further, to make the works and their technological dimension visible and understandable in the context of a change in cultural practices and the languages and media used by artists both to a public conversant with new technologies as well as a non-informed audience?

The seminar will reflect on prototypes and interfaces developed by art centres and museums in their relationship with the public.

Theoretical sessions, consisting of a paper accompanied by a dialogue between the speakers and a debate with the audience, will be combined with a programme of practical sessions on the relationship of museum institutions and the exhibition with their users and visitors.
