The launch of the fall season at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) promises a rich and varied experience, with the presentation of major works by two internationally renowned artists, Ryoji Ikeda and Krzysztof Wodiczko.
North American premiere in Montréal: The MAC presents superposition by Ryoji Ikeda
This coming October 11 at 7:30pm, the Musée d’art contemporain is presenting the North American premiere of superposition, a performance by Japanese electronic-music composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda at Théâtre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts, in collaboration with the Festival du nouveau cinéma. Following its Montréal presentation, superposition will travel to the Metropolitan Museum, New York, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, University Musical Society, Ann Arbor, and UCLA, Los Angeles.
Offering a unique sensory experience combining sound, visuals, physical phenomena, mathematical concepts, human behaviour and randomness, superposition has been widely acclaimed internationally. As Marie Lechner writes in Libération, superposition is “a blend of sound performance and live show, a total experience, both physical and mental.” On stage, two performers interpret a score for unconventional instruments that generates a series of video images retranscribed in real time onto a set of 21 screens assembled with the utmost precision. All the scenic elements—sound, light, video—are orchestrated in a unique, powerful audiovisual performance.

Homeless Projection: Place des Arts, 2014, by Krzysztof Wodiczko
In the lead-up to BNLMTL 2014, the 2014 edition of La Biennale de Montréal, the MAC, in collaboration with the Quartier des Spectacles, has commissioned a new work by Krzysztof Wodiczko. Homeless Projection: Place des Arts is a site-specific large-scale projection in which the bodies and voices of the homeless who frequent Montréal’s downtown core will populate the multi-tiered surface of Théâtre Maisonneuve.
Working in close collaboration with St. Michael’s Mission and other community organizations, Wodiczko offers the homeless a space to recount their experiences, tell their stories and express their fears and desires, thus providing a more intimate portrait of homelessness. Placing the staged projection on a theatre means that the participants become both spectators of official culture and actors playing in their own theatre, following their own lived script. The changing face of cities, increasingly given over to commercial interests and the privatization of public space, impacts heavily on marginalized populations; by giving voice to those who are visible but not always heard, Wodiczko opens up a democratic space for social speech.
Curated by Lesley Johnstone, Homeless Projection: Place des Arts will be on view from October 8 to November 22, Wednesdays through Saturdays, starting at sunset. Co-produced by the MAC, the Quartier des Spectacles and the Phi Centre, in collaboration with St. Michael’s Mission, Wodiczko’s Homeless Projection is part of L’avenir (looking forward), the 2014 edition of La Biennale de Montréal. This work is in the Collection of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.
