The Artistic Director of PIAC, Lorenzo Fusi, is delighted to announce the three artworks shortlisted for the 2016 PIAC – Prix International d’Art Contemporain (International Contemporary Art Prize):

Subconscious Society, a Feature (2014) by Rosa Barba nominated by Chiara Parisi
Campo del Cielo, Field of the Sky (2014) by Katie Paterson nominated by Marc-Olivier Wahler
pssst Leopard, 2A7+ (2013) by Natascha Sadr Haghighian nominated by Nina Tabassomi

The PIAC – Prix International d’Art Contemporain (International Contemporary Art Prize) is awarded every three years for a recent work by an artist at the forefront of their practice, rewarding the finalist with a sum of 40,000 EURO, including 20,000 EUR to fund the production of a new work. For the 2016 prize, the commission will be premiered in Brazil, alongside the winning artwork, during the 2016 São Paulo Biennial.

Established in 1965, PIAC has been organised by The Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco since 1983. In recent years, the Prize has been awarded to artists of international repute, each nominated by a leading art world professional. The Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco has launched a Nomadic Pavilion for 2016 which will include the presentation of the newly commissioned work by the winning artist to coincide with a key event in the international art world calendar. The selected artist will also be invited to share their knowledge with the local community through the Monaco Workshop, a new project designed to encourage regional engagement and help foster a new generation of artists, students and practitioners.

Among the all-female shortlist, Berlin-based, Italian artist Rosa Barba’s work engages questions of time like inscriptions in landscapes and language, cutting across history and subject matter. She is particularly interested in abstracting the cinematographic medium, pushing it to its limits and possibilities by creating 3D installations involving sculptures and publications. Subconscious Society focuses once again on her interest in time’s materiality. The work was partly filmed in Manchester’s Albert Hall and around a flotsam off the North Kent coast. Both abandoned spaces are re-inhabited in Barba’s Subconscious Society blurring the boundaries of time and place. The work was nominated by Chiara Parisi, Director of Cultural Programmes at Monnaie de Paris.

Based in Scotland and Berlin, Katie Paterson is widely regarded as an artist working at the forefront of her generation. Collaborating with leading scientists and researchers across the world, Paterson’s poetic and conceptual projects consider our place on Earth in the context of geological time and change. In Campo del Cielo, Field of the Sky, Paterson has taken a 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite found in Argentina and re-cast it into a new version of itself. A small piece of the iron meteorite was then returned to space by the European Space Agency. The work was nominated by Marc-Olivier Wahler, founder and current Director of Chalet Society, Paris.

Currently based in Berlin, Natascha Sadr Haghighian’s research-based practice encompasses a variety of forms and formats, among them video, performance, installations, text, and sound, and is primarily concerned with the socio-political implications of contemporary modes of world-making, especially in the field of vision. Pssst Leopard, 2A7+ is a demilitarised farcical copy of the actual prototype of the Leopard 2A7+ battle tank; one of the future German export products specially designed and optimised for pacification of uprisings, protest and unrest in urban areas. The work has the same base area as the tank, yet is made out of Lego and in place of the turret with its pivotable gun barrel; it carries 60 headphone plugs arranged around the diameter of the turret. The work was nominated by Nina Tabassomi, curator at Fridericianum, Kassel.

In addition to the PIAC, the Fondation grants an additional prize, the newly established Prix pour un écrit sur l’art contemporain (Contemporary Art Writing and Critical Thinking Award) each year awarded to an exceptional writer/practitioner for undertaking innovative and genre-defining research work or to complete their current writing projects.
