CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo is pleased to present the group show Sin motivo aparente (For no apparent reason), curated by Javier Hontoria, on view from May 10 to September 29, 2013, which includes over thirty national and international artists. The show seeks to review the relationship between current art practices and audiences within a concrete context, CA2M. One of the main goals of this institution since its inception in 2008 has been to examine the role of the audience. In this show, the selected works do not follow a specific thread as it seeks to deploy the experience of “seeing” art from the curatorial tyranny and the discursive imposition.

The exhibition takes the work of Lawrence Weiner and Robert Filliou as its point of departure, since from their respective positions, both artists introduced essential tools to understand new ways for the reception of art production.

New York artist Lawrence Weiner declared in 1969 that “the piece may not be built.” This meant that art could only function as an idea and that it would take its final “shape” in the viewers’ subjective perception. He also said that he was interested in what the words meant but that he’d rather expect the viewers to look at the words and sentences under their own perceptive codes. This is the main idea hovering over the project, which is indeed, aimed at exploring ourselves as receptors of art.

Sin motivo aparente also thrives on the legacy from French artist Robert Filliou (1924–1987), who produced a fascinating work that seeked to free art from its venerable and elitist aura. Filliou thought that to make art there was no need to be a genius because the only necessary tools were innocence and imagination, qualities common to us all. The art Filliou wanted was one based on seduction and spontaneity, on play and poetry.

Sin motivo aparente attempts to explore the concept of “exhibition” as a device for the presentation of artworks. Those included in the show do not seek to illustrate ideas. Instead, however, they try to illustrate themselves.

The artists showcasing are Ignasi Aballí, Jesse Ash, Silvia Bächli, Alejandro Cesarco, Étienne Chambaud, Jeremy Deller, José Díaz, Jason Dodge, Lara Favaretto, Robert Filliou, Peter Fischli/David Weiss, Ceal Floyer, Fernando García, Tamar Guimaräes, Fermín Jiménez Landa, Runo Lagomarsino, Joachim Koester, Carlos Maciá, David Maljkovic, Mark Manders, Helen Mirra, Guillermo Pfaff, Kirsten Pieroth, Dan Rees, Jorge Satorre, Nedko Solakov, Julia Spínola, Daniel Steegmann Mangrané, Wolfgang Tillmans, Francesc Torres, and Lawrence Weiner.

The exhibition catalogue features texts and contributions by Javier Hontoria, writer Abel H. Pozuelo and poet Carlos Marzal.
