Organized by Lise Nellemann; Dave Beech, Heman Chong, Annika Eriksson, Lise Harlev, Jakob Kolding, Susan Philipsz, Reinigungsgesellschaft, Home Video System / Johannes Raether, Oliver Ressler, Gitte Villesen + Archive: Old Habits Die Hard

For five weeks the artist run space Sparwasser HQ shifts its activities from Berlin to the center of Istanbul. A variety of activities, performances, talks and exhibits will consider the artist’s involvement in communicating and distributing artistic ideas by establishing alternative models of representation.

Invited by Platform, Sparwasser HQ acts both as guest and secondary host, in turn inviting artists and people of interest to contribute to the exhibition’s developing conceptual framework. As a result, Sparwasser HQ examines the different self-organized networks that develop through this process of inviting, hosting and collaborating.

Participating artists include Annika Eriksson, who exhibits The Session, a project that brings together two music forms: Rap and Repente, which share an interest in spoken word and improvisation; Johannes Raether’s Home Video System project which provides a series of video art screenings which have been organized by the artist to take place in private homes around Istanbul; Jakob Kolding who asks publicly if there is any attempt to involve or exclude people living in the local neighborhood to use the public space in the way they wish to use it. Finally the video archive Old Habits Die Hard will also be housed at Platform with 50 art works selected by artist run spaces and art collectives available for the public to watch at their convenience. These situations consider representation, the right free to free speech and use of the public space; ideas, which link to the framework of the research and archiving of artist run spaces and their activities.

Sparwasser HQ is a non-profit platform for artist curated projects, with collaborative and discursive research as a first priority. Sparwasser HQ is working with a continually changing idea of ‘exhibition’ practice, building up a laboratory of ideas for art workers and their audience and establishing a network between people. Sparwasser HQ transfers focus from the purely visual, to the production of dialogue. By involving the public, we work with inclusive and democratic strategies, discussing themes of migration, nationality and autonomous art production.

Sparwasser HQ at Platform is supported by Kunststyrelsen, Billedkunstcentret.
Rebecca Gordon Nesbitt has been invited as part of the British Council lecture series at Platform.
