This summer, Asia Society Museum exhibits three compelling video works by artists Yang Fudong (China), Rahraw Omarzad (Afghanistan), and Seifollah Samadian (Iran).

Shanghai-based artist Yang Fudong’s five-part cinematic masterpiece Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest is shown in its entirety for the first time in a U.S. museum. While referencing the Seven Sages, a popular subject in traditional Chinese art, the artist imbues a film noir aesthetic into this mesmerizing black-and-white film. The New York Times states, Yang Fudong “creates sequences of images that are like perfectly composed Modernist photographs.” This exhibition is curated by Melissa Chiu and Miwako Tezuka, Asia Society. An eighty-four page book accompanies the exhibition, and is available at AsiaStore.

Sight Unseen: Video from Afghanistan and Iran features work by Rahraw Omarzad and Seifollah Samadian. Both artists are ardent supporters of artistic independence in their home countries. Although the works are stylistically different, Sight Unseen reveals these two artists’ intense exploration of the human condition. Omarzad is one of Afghanistan’s foremost experimental artists and established the Center for Contemporary Art Afghanistan (CCAA), the only not-for-profit arts organization in the country. Samadian is highly regarded internationally and has worked with celebrated film directors such as Abbas Kiarostami and Martin Scorsese. His filmic works often document everyday scenes from his homeland. This exhibition is curated by Miwako Tezuka.
