Gaetano Pesce: Il tempo della diversità (The Time of Diversity)
June 26–October 5
Throughout his life Gaetano Pesce has theorized diversity, randomness, the breaking down of barriers between subject areas and freedom from conformism and predictability, designing objects inspired by people that respect life’s unpredictability, praising flaws and errors: MAXXI is now dedicating to this architect, designer and world-famous artist the exhibition Gaetano Pesce: Il tempo della diversità.

Visitors are invited to be active participants in the exhibition through the choice of seven thematic routes illustrating the artist’s output: Non standard, Persona, Luogo, Difetto, Paesaggio, Corpo, Politica (Not Standard, Person, Place, Flaw, Landscape, Body, Politics).

Dominating the external piazza is a giant version of Up 5&6, also known as Donna and Mamma, the iconic armchair in the shape of a woman created by Pesce in 1969 in protest at the status of women.

The Independent
June 26–October 12
A free space in which platforms for contemporary experimentation are invited to present their work: The Independent is a three-year project devoted to the promotion of national and international independent groups working in the fields of art, architecture, design, dance and music as well embracing broader areas such as publishing and town planning. The groups will be interpreting the fluid space of the museum through new display modes, talks, performances and lectures. The exhibition opens with the Italians CURA. and Isola Art Center.

This first chapter also represents an opportunity to launch an open call to all those groups operating in the field so that we can begin to create initially an Italian and subsequently a European and international mapping of all the independent groups working in the contemporary culture sector: a social-cultural panorama of enormous wealth and great interest for the development of new models.

YAP MAXXI 2014
June 27–October 26
A great wooden wall and hundreds of light ampules that at night illuminate a portable theatre housing the many events of MAXXI’s summer programme: this is the installation 8 1/2 by the Rome-based studio orizzontale, winner of the YAP Young Architects Program 2014.

Focusing on the theme of the public use of space, recycling and self-building, the installation transforms the Piazza Alighiero Boetti space into an arena for hosting free architecture, film, design, poetry, music and theatre events.

YAP MAXXI is the program promoting and supporting young architectures, now in its fourth Italian edition, organized by MAXXI in collaboration with MoMA/MoMA PS1 of New York, Constructo of Santiago de Chile, Istanbul Modern (Turkey) and for the first time MMCA the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Seoul (Korea).
