Congolese stars are part of the January line-up at Carsten Höller’s Double Club, the unique art installation realised in collaboration with the Fondazione Prada which showcases the best of Congolese and Western cultures until May 2009.

The restaurant/bar/night-club will see Congolese star-DJs and live acts exchanging sets with their Western counterparts each week, with dedicated Western nights on Fridays and Congolese evenings on Saturdays. The restaurant will serve food from both cultures against the backdrop of artworks by Andy Warhol, Alighiero e Boetti and Carla Accardi. In the month since it opened, The Double Club has seen Congolese Sapeurs drinking alongside East London party kids and leading members of the art world.

All profits are going to The City of Joy charity, which provides shelter and services to women who have been targets of violence during Congo’s long running civil war.

Situated in an old Victorian warehouse located just behind Angel Tube Station, the concept is inspired by Carsten Höller’s passion for the music and people of the Congo. The artist uses his training as a scientist in his work as an artist, concentrating particularly on the nature of human relationships. Born in Brussels in 1961, he now lives and works in Stockholm. He has undertaken many projects that invite visitor interaction, such as Flying Machine (1996) that hoists the user through the air and Upside-Down Goggles (1994/2001) that modify vision. In 2006 he made Test Site in “The Unilever Series” for the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern in London, a work that followed several earlier slide pieces. In 2008, he created Revolving Hotel Room, an art installation which allowed museum-goers the chance to spend the night at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, as part of theanyspacewhatever exhibition.

The Double Club is produced by the Fondazione Prada who have presented several internationally renowned contemporary artists’ projects in a programme often features collaborations and multiple approaches to the creative process, with a unique capacity to embrace utopias such as The Double Club.
