“Coming from a Chinese art context, it is easy to think that White Cube and Gagosian equal the contemporary global art scene. Through the Gallerist Programme, I understand there to be many ‘art worlds’ that are not defined in one system and actually feel encouraged to find my own partners and establish exchanges. The Gallerist Programme also helped me rethink the business model of my own gallery and I have learned a lot of basic skills as a consequence of being exposed to so many different practices.” –Fang Fang (Star Gallery Beijng), participant GP

“Something I have found really interesting about the programme was the international relationships developed within the group of participants, from all corners of the globe teasing out cultural differences in reference to world art markets has given me a real insight into art audiences and collections worldwide.” –Nathaniel Pitt, (Division of Labour, Worcester), participant GP

In October 2012, de Appel arts centre and The Fair Gallery (gb agency, Paris; Hollybush Gardens, London; Jan Mot, Brussels; Raster, Warsaw) launched a new professional development programme, the Gallerist Programme. De Appel arts centre and the Fair Gallery now recruit participants for the second edition of the GP running September 2013–June 2014.

The Gallerist Programme is the first practical training program for art professionals in the commercial segment of the art world, challenging participants to hone their knowledge and skills. The Gallerist Programme approaches the art market through a unique ‘learning by doing’ principle. Lessons and readings of histories of the art market are linked to case studies, practical workshops and informal meetings with a variety of professionals and collectors, and are rolled into a final assignment in the real playing field of LISTE Art Fair Basel.

LISTE is the leading international art fair for young and emerging galleries, and takes place annually alongside Art Basel, the undisputed number-one art fair worldwide. Throughout the fair the Gallerist Programme holds one booth, where its participants create a series of presentations under a collective title as their final project. LISTE offers participants a unique opportunity to debut themselves at the epicenter of their professional field.

The curriculum of the Gallerist Programme takes into account the critical balance between the artistic/curatorial and business goals that the gallery owner faces in today’s global market. The tensions between artistic, curatorial and business perspectives are key for the discussions, but the administrative and practical aspects of the profession which are the backbone of a gallery’s operations are also be taken into account.

The annual Gallerist Programme brings together ten participants and is structured around six to eight sessions spread over nine months and takes place at various locations worldwide. It is organized on location and in line with fairs, gallery weekends and open studio events (such as Art Dubai, The Armory Show, Frieze, ABC Berlin, Sao Paulo International Art Fair, Art Basel Hong Kong, and Rijksakademie Open). The meetings play out over a minimum of five days or maximum of ten days. The various environments and situations of the locations provide a context for the content of the seminars and their material.

Advisory Committee: Peter Blaüer (Director, Liste), Richard Flood (Chief Curator, New Museum), Teresa Gleadowe (independent curator), Runa Islam, Olav Velthuis (economic sociologist, UvA), Zhang Wei (Vitamin Creative Space)

Contributors and Interlocutors (2012–2013): Georgina Adam (The Art Newspaper), Doryun Chung & Christian Rattemeyer (MoMA), Richard Flood (New Museum), Vincent Honoré (David Roberts Art Foundation), Noah Horowitz (The Armory Show), Karen Knispel (Professional Coaching), Barbara Corti (Hauser & Wirth), Joep van Lieshout (Atelier van Lieshout), Stella Lohaus, Suhail Malik (Goldsmiths, University of London), Tim Marlow, Peter Brandt, Irene Bradbury & Andrea Schlieker (White Cube), Daniel McClean (independent curator and attorney), Elizabeth Nielson (Zabludowicz Collection), Sam Orlofsky (Gagosian), Janelle Reiring (Metro Pictures), Hanna Schouwink (David Zwirner), Edward Winkleman, and Jonas Žakaitis, amongst many others.

Who can apply?: The program highlights new developments and shifts within the art world and art market. It is therefore specific in giving attention to and recruiting participants from the geographical contexts of the emerging markets, and beyond. The curriculum accommodates young gallery employees or young gallery owners who have only just started running their business, and allow them to build upon what they might have already learned and or experienced. On the other hand, the program is also open to art professionals who are not in the commercial sector of this industry yet, but want to gain insight and focus before commencing their own business.
