The Jerusalem Show VII is curated by Basak Senova and organized by Al-Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art, Jerusalem in collaboration with several institutions, among them, the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center, the French Institute, and Khalidi Library Cultural Foundation. The Jerusalem Show VII 2014 runs from 24 October to 7 November. The Show will be presented in the framework of the second Qalandiya International, ARCHIVES, LIVED AND SHARED. Qi is a coalition of local institutions working together to feature a month-long program of live events, talks, exhibitions, guided tours, symposia, film screenings, and performances. The Jerusalem Show is an integral part of the 2014 edition of Qi, scheduled to take place October 22 to November 15.
The Jerusalem Show VII, titled FRACTURES, will bring together projects, which attempt to detect and process multiple realities and perceptions of events and conditions in relation with different time sequences. By taking “Jerusalem” as the nucleus of these attempts, the basic aim of the project is to establish and discover links between the diverse artistic manifestations and contributions, accumulated in the course of the project and the daily-life realities of the city.
FRACTURES is composed of seven chapters that will take place simultaneously: Intensities, Details, Intervals, Measures, Lines, Writing, and Fabric. These chapters present exhibitions, site-specific art projects, performances, artist books, book launches, walks, talks and screenings.
Intensities will encompass an exhibition that will focus on the different levels of intensities that could be detected and processed in the projects in relation to the observed and perceived intensities in the city. At the same time, the exhibition will examine the relationship between “events” and their unsettled intensities.
For Details, artists will produce or re-shape their existing projects in sync with the observations and findings (mixed, discontinuous and dislocated structures, events, stories, and memories) on Jerusalem. Intervals will be about possibilities and how we are able to perceive a sense of order and time through intervals.
Measures deals with both physical and mental landscapes. This chapter investigates the links between landscapes, measures, control mechanisms and time-based perceptions.
Screening programs form the chapter Line and are curated by Yazid Anani (Palestine), Anne Barlow (Scotland / US), Branko Franceschi (Croatia), and Basak Senova (Turkey).
Writing presents site-specific sound-based performances by the participating artists.
Dedicated to books, the Fabric chapter focuses on book launches and readings, along with a display of a selection of artists’ books that includes the works of Hani Amra (Palestine), Banu Cennetoglu (Turkey), Cevdet Erek (Turkey), Maxime Hourani (Lebanon), Ciprian Homorodean (Romania), Jill Magid (USA), Tom Nicholson (Australia), and Uriel Orlow (Switzerland / UK).
Participating artists of The Jerusalem Show VII are Majd Abdel Hamid (Palestine), Adel Abidin (Iraq/Finland), Noor Abuarafeh (Palestine), Benji Boyadgian (Palestine), Lara Baladi (Egypt), Hera Buyuktascian (Turkey), Paul Devens (The Netherlands), Cevdet Erek (Turkey), Rula Halawani (Palestine), Bashar Hroub (Palestine), Jesper Just (Denmark / USA), Gulsun Karamustafa (Turkey), Jonathan Loppin (France), Jumana Manna (Palestine), Conor McGrady (Ireland), Tom Nicholson (Australia), Pekka Niittyvirta (Finland), Ceren Oykut (Turkey), Raqs Collective Media (India), Hiraki Sawa (UK / Japan), Sille Storihle (Norway / Germany) and Zehra Sonya (Cyprus).
The media partner for the Jerusalem Show will be Ibraaz, the leading online critical forum for visual culture in North Africa and the Middle East. Launched as an initiative of the Kamel Lazaar Foundation in 2011, Ibraaz is dedicated to producing in-depth knowledge about contemporary cultural production. For the duration of the Jerusalem Show, it will dedicate a section of its platform to publishing an online ‘catalogue’ detailing the artists’ activities and accompanying events.
Qalandiya International is the culmination of the vision and effort of a group of prominent Palestinian cultural institutions focusing on contemporary art. This includes the following institutions: Riwaq; Al-Ma’mal; the A. M. Qattan Foundation; the Palestinian Museum; Palestinian Art Court – Al Hoash; the International Academy of Art Palestine; the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre; the Ramallah Municipality; and the Arab Culture Association in Haifa. Qalandiya International is also in partnership this year with MinRASY Projects, Windows for Contemporary Art and Eltiqa Group for Contemporary Art in Gaza, and the Workshop in Haifa.
