Double opening Thursday, April 2 at the GAMeC – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo.

To kick off the Esposizione Universale – l’arte alla prova del tempo openings: eight exhibitions within a single exhibition space curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio. More than one hundred works, dating from the 15th to 21st century, portray the universal themes treated by ancient, modern and contemporary artists. Works from different periods are hung together, the classical and the modern contrast one another to outline the influences and relations that have come down from the past to reflect on the present and vice versa.

In Esposizione Universale del Potere, Esposizione Universale del Quotidiano, Esposizione Universale della Vita, Esposizione Universale della Morte, Esposizione Universale della Mente, Esposizione Universale del Corpo, Esposizione Universale dell’Odio, Esposizione Universale dell’Amore, works by Giovanni Bellini, Bergognone, Sandro Botticelli, Vittore Carpaccio, Vincenzo Foppa, Pisanello, Tiziano, are confronted with those by Christo, Francesco Clemente, Felice Casorati, Marcel Duchamp, Giorgio De Chirico, Filippo De Pisis, Gino De Dominicis, Jimmie Durham, Gilbert & George, Ilya Kabakov, Joseph Kosuth, Maria Lai, Marisa Merz, Pino Pascali, Luigi Ontani, Ettore Spalletti, Jeff Wall, Gilberto Zorio, Mario Airò, Stefano Arienti, Simone Berti, Roberto Cuoghi, Meschac Gaba, Margherita Manzelli, Diego Perrone, Pietro Roccasalva, among others.

The leitmotif of the Ben Vautier exhibition that recurs in all the rooms – his mottos – offers a visual “caption” that introduces each theme and room.

Held concurrently will be RAPTUS, a location specific project by the artist Marcello Maloberti, curated by Alessandro Rabottini. It is the biggest exhibition ever dedicated to the artist by an Italian museum, and it is part of a series conceived to honor Arturo Toffetti.

Maloberti represents life as a RAPTUS, an unexpected and incontrollable action, an improvised explosion of energy and vitality. RAPTUS is an imposing installation consisting of objects, sounds, lights and images, it is a playful and bizarre mix of many expressive means.

The exhibition will be accompanied by one of the most exhaustive monographs ever dedicated to the artist, with texts by Sabine Folie (Director of the Generali Foundation in Vienna), Martin Herbert (European Editor of Modern Painters), the exhibition’s curator Alessandro Rabottini and a lengthy conversation between Marcello Maloberti and Caroline Corbetta.
