The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (CCS Bard) has announced Why New Forms?, a Curatorial Conference organized on the occasion of CCS Bard’s 20th anniversary year, taking place Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard College. The Conference has been organized by CCS Bard alumni/ae Dan Byers,The Richard Armstrong Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Carnegie Museum of Art, and Ruba Katrib, Curator of the SculptureCenter in New York City.

Throughout its 20-year history as a site of curatorial education, CCS Bard has encouraged its students and faculty to question the motives and avenues of curating exhibitions, events, programs, publications, and archives. Why New Forms? will address a selection of timely issues with the history of CCS Bard’s curatorial progam as a backdrop. Organized around specific exhibitions, publications, and organizations as models, the Conference brings together important recent projects that are grounded in the creative use or repurposing of existing structures and conventional idioms, yet still retain a productive—or at least dynamic—relationship to institutions.

Why New Forms? will include four panel discussions over the two days of the Conference, featuring a diverse range of important voices in contemporary curating, including several CCS Bard alumni/ae.

Why New Forms? will coincide with the opening of CCS Bard’s major summer exhibitions, From 199A to 199B : Liam Gillick, curated by Executive Director, Tom Eccles, and Anti-Establishment, curated by Graduate Program Director Johanna Burton. For further information on these exhibitions, please see the respective press releases here and here. Both exhibitions are on view June 23–December 21, 2012, with an opening reception on Saturday, June 23 from 1–5pm.

Free tickets for the conference are available on www.brownpapertickets.com.

About the Center for Curatorial Studies
The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (CCS Bard) is an exhibition, education, and research center dedicated to the study of art and curatorial practices from the 1960s to the present day.

In addition to the CCS Bard Galleries and Hessel Museum of Art, the Center houses the Marieluise Hessel Collection, as well as an extensive library and curatorial archives that are accessible to the public. The Center’s two-year M.A. program in curatorial studies is specifically designed to deepen students’ understanding of the intellectual and practical tasks of curating contemporary art. Exhibitions are presented year-round in the CCS Bard Galleries and Hessel Museum of Art, providing students with the opportunity to work with world-renowned artists and curators. The exhibition program and the Hessel Collection also serve as the basis for a wide range of public programs and activities exploring art and its role in contemporary society.

The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College opened its doors in 1992. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2012, CCS Bard presents a series of exhibitions by students, as well as a roster of international artists, working in a range of practices.
