General
History
Espai d’Art contempoarani de Castello (EACC), is a centre for the production and dissemination of contemporary art, under Proyecto Castell— Cultural and the Consorcio de Museos de la Comunidad Valenciana, two public bodies belonging to the Generalitat Valenciana, the Valencian regional government. Juli‡n Esteban Chapapr’a designed the EACC’s building.
Since opening in 1999, EACC has become a focal point of the art scene in the city of Castello, and by extension, the Valencian region. EACC focuses on research, exhibitions and the dissemination of information on contemporary art practices. With an international program, EACC seeks to be more than an exhibition venue, by inviting the public to reflect on current societal thinking from analytical and interdisciplinary perspectives.
Programming
EACC aims to be consolidated as an artistic and cultural activator; reflect on new strategies of action; revitalize new stage possibilities; involve the city as a real stage to increase artistic and cultural practices; establish a network with other museum institutions; stimulate audience participation; promote investigation and analysis; generate opinion and discussions through contemporary art; generate production specific projects while paying the same attention to exhibitions and activities and link its exhibition project with public art initiatives taking place in the urban, social and economic space of the city. Most importantly, it insists on the conception of the exhibition space and of the museum itself as a flexible place, capable to critically question and become a context which can generate strategies that provide new forms of understanding the more immediate future.
Through exhibitions, seminars, didactic workshops, cinema seasons and concert series, EACC poses a critical analysis on the meaning and function of the art institution to consider how it embraces its ideological, spatial and social dimensions. In doing so, EACC reconsiders the museum and its limitations, and its use value in society in which new demands exist.
In addition, EACC works with the great potential of the phenomenon of urban planning and cities. It does this through in depth considerations of spatial perspectives but also by highlighting its increasing relevance to social complexity, and its ability to form histories and collective memory.
EACC presents approximately 4 exhibitions each year.
