General

History

Fondazione March was born in Padua on the 29th of March 2007 with the aim to be a project of and for contemporary art, engaged in promoting independent art research and in creating a system which may free creativity from the bonds of the art market.

The meeting between Silvia Ferri, originator of the project, and artist Jonathan Monk sparked the identity and name fondazione march. The artist’s will to anchor the organization to its founding moment (29th of March), and the choice to underline its “work in progress” in art and culture related activities resulted in fondazione changing its name month by month. fondazione march thus has 12 names and 12 logos. Mobility is the key for all of its projects.

fondazione march is thus aggregation; an alternative way of working; a reflection on culture; an attempt to understand the times we live in; and the utopia of changing a territory.

Programming

Fondazione March was conceived as an open experimental space, horizontal and fluid. Its aims and objectives are to fill the lack of not-for-profit art organizations in Italy and help and support young artists with experimental projects. It aims to break down bonds to the proliferation of art and build a contemporary art network, connecting local artists to the wider International system, and tightening relations between not-for-profit organizations, private galleries and contemporary art museums. fondazione march gives particular relevance to the theme Arts & Business.

The cultural programme of the foundation involves mainly midcareer International artists, that are relatively unknown in Italy. Special attention is also paid to young Italian emerging artists. fondazione march is constantly renewed by the curatorial turnover of Europe and through collaborations with international organizations.

CameraVideo, is a video-art touring festival investigating the relationship between video and cinema. The festival travels Italy and the world yearly to promote the artists selected via open call.

Motore di ricerca, is a circulating archive which tours galleries and other exhibition spaces throughout Europe to allow the diffusion of young emerging artists’ works. Artists are selected according to a key theme or “search engine”.

Public programming

To accompany exhibitions, fondazione march schedules residencies, an artists archive, and didactic programs that fall into the realms of public and education programming.

Art&Co, is an exhibition and event program hosted by local companies to connect art and new territories. The series highlights possible innovative conceptual developments between such diverse contexts within the North-East of Italy with the hope of sparking new synergies between business and culture. This feeds towards the North-East of Italy’s aim to become a candidate for the European Capital of Culture in 2019.

Technogel Art Project; is an international artists residency, which selects one artist each year to visit the leading gel producer and develop a theme of interest. Schedules are flexible and tailored to the artist’s needs.

Lago Studio Art-Workshop and Waiting Room; these are art&business curatorial projects in collaboration with the design brand Lago.

Educational Programming

Fondazione March leads an educational programme that includes workshops, lectures, talks and more didactic events that take place on-site, as well as a more academically minded program, What is the Contemporary?

What is the contemporary? is a series of lectures and workshops held by leading art professionals specifically for secondary school and University students. New academic locations hosting single lectures are added to the schedule year new premises are added.
