The Whitechapel Gallery – the artists’ gallery for everyone.

Founded in 1901, the Whitechapel Gallery is a touchstone for contemporary art internationally, plays a central role in London’s cultural landscape and is pivotal to the continued growth of the world’s most vibrant contemporary art quarter.

Distinguished for its pioneering exhibitions and public programmes for over a century, the Gallery offers visitors the opportunity to engage with a rich community of international creative practitioners who are regularly invited to exhibit their work and share ideas as part of the Gallery’s yearly programme of events.

Our history has always been the future. For over a century the Whitechapel Gallery has premiered world-class artists from modern masters such as Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Frida Kahlo and Hannah Höch to contemporaries such as Zarina Bhimji, Sophie Calle, William Kentridge, Eduardo Paolozzi and Michael Rakowitz.

With beautiful galleries, exhibitions, artist commissions, collection displays, historic archives, education resources, inspiring art courses, a Cafe/Bar and Bookshop, the Gallery is open all year round, so there is always something free to see.

Part of the Gallery’s commitment to multi-disciplinary projects and access to educational material is the new Master of Arts degree in Curating Art and Public Programmes which provides emerging curators with hands-on experience in the field of contemporary art, developing exhibitions and public programmes.
