The Athens Biennale is a contemporary art exhibition held every two years in various locations in Athens, Greece. It is one of the largest international events of contemporary culture in Greece and it has been acknowledged as one of the most significant and innovative cultural initiatives in Europe by the European Cultural Foundation (2015 ECF Princess Margriet Award for Culture).

In 2007, the Athens Biennale founded the European Biennial Network (2007), a collaborative structure aiming to promote dialogue, interaction and collaboration between contemporary art biennials in Europe, while it is a member of the International Biennial Association, a platform for the exchange of the know-how among the organisations and the art professionals operating in the context of Biennials.

Functioning within an international network of large-scale periodic contemporary art events, the Athens Biennale aims at both constituting an observatory of collective issues and a platform for the designation of the contemporary culture of the Athenian metropolis. Since its establishment in 2005, it aspires to serve as an agent of change and innovation, promoting experimental formats and various curatorial approaches as well as connecting the local artistic production with the international art scene of contemporary art.

Until now, the Athens Biennale has presented six editions, featuring more than 800 artists, theorists, and creatives and commissioning 127 new productions & premieres.
