Yokohama Museum of Art is a municipal art museum of Yokohama, one of the largest cities in Japan with a population of 3.7 million people, that opened to the public in 1989. Its founding policies of “look, create, and learn” are manifested in the iconic architecture designed by Tange Kenzo, which consists of exhibition galleries, professionally-equipped ateliers for hands-on workshops, and a library.

Its collection of over 13,000 artworks of wide-ranging media starts from the late 19th century, marking the opening of the port of Yokohama, and continues to the present, tracing the history of modern and contemporary art through the exchanges made between Japan and the world.

In partnership with the City of Yokohama and with funding from the national government, it has hosted the Yokohama Triennale since the fourth edition in 2011 to promote cultural exchange through contemporary art.

The building is currently undergoing renovation and is scheduled to reopen in fiscal 2023.
