THE JIM THOMPSON ART CENTER

Located in the heart of Bangkok, The Jim Thompson Art Center opened in 2003 and is situated in the same compound as the unique Jim Thompson House Museum. Serving as a haven for Bangkok’s local and international arts and culture communities, the Jim Thompson Art Center’s reputation as a place to mingle, interact, and exchange dialogue is rapidly spreading. In conjunction with its exhibitions, our activities include parties, events, seminars, lectures, and workshops. 

The Jim Thompson Art Center is operated under the James H.W. Thompson Foundation, named for the American who assembled a Thai and Southeast Asian art collection in his traditional teak home. The mission of the Art Center is to nurture artistic activities and create public awareness of both contemporary and traditional arts in today’s context. Among its many activities, the Art Center works with both in-house and guest curators to organize exhibitions, conducts educational and outreach programs, produces publications, and networks and collaborates with local and international cultural institutions. Since its inception, the Art Center has organized over 40 exhibitions of contemporary and pre-modern art and conducted 200 educational programs. Previous exhibitions include Pinaree Sanpitak, Arahmaiani, Christian Lacroix, Interweaving cultures, Metissages, and a crossbreeding of contemporary art and textiles. Traditional exhibitions focused on Southeast Asian textiles, including ikats, costumes, and maps painted on cloth. Since 2010, the art center has shifted its focus to Southeast Asian regional perspectives within contemporary art practices and discourses. The projects include Missing Links, moving images from Southeast Asia (2015), and Pola, Patterns of Meaning (2016). Other facilities include the William Warren Library and studio for Conservators without Borders (Conservators sans Frontiers).
