The Havana Biennial was established in 1984. While the first event was dedicated to artists of Latin America and the Caribbean, the Biennial has grown to include artists from Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The Biennial’s focus on the Global South has made Havana an important venue for the gathering and exhibition of ‘non-Western’ art.
The Biennial continues to situate itself within the geopolitics that govern wealth, information, and development, offering a forum for discourse on topics such as colonization, art’s place in society, tradition vs. contemporariness, memory, and humanity in the time of technology.

Determined by research and curatorial process, all Biennial participants are selected according to certain parameters, such as the given theme. The Biennial curatorial team of the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center in Havana takes under consideration the suggestions and connections provided international colleagues to build relationships with artists worldwide.
