BRIAN MCKEE Detritus

For the past four years Brian McKee, the 26-year-old American photography artist, has been traveling through America, Eastern Europe and the Far East in search of historical sites of topical interest. He takes pictures of sites where unique contemporary events in world politics and by international society were held. Detritus is part of his concept of a project for work.

Brian McKee considers himself to be a visualizing historian, capturing the traces of the controversy between Soviets and Afghans. The photographer contemplates our approach to fast-paced perception. His themes are architecture and landscapes in Afghanistan which reveal destruction and losses only at a second glance. A seemingly beautiful portrayal transforms into a gruesome scene of human suffering.

Brian McKee attaches great significance to pictures with classical compositions and a clear finish. He uses as a camera with plates (8x10 inches), which is a heavy studio camera that can only be used when put on a tripod. This creates a different relationship to reality on account of his multi-layered photographs.
