Chac Mool Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of drawings by Steven Steinman. The exhibition opens Friday January 9th, and the show will run through February 7, 2004. The artist will be present at the opening on Friday from 6:00-9:00 in the evening.

With his drawings, Steinman sets out on a journey, raising himself above the surface of the earth to a distant point from which he turns his gaze back again. The drawings are like views from outer space, of the landscape structures and formations of the earth.

Steinman's drawings are multi-layered - scraped and scratched. "The implicit violence of this gesture is curbed by a caressing hand that moves rhythmically over the sheet first with a pointed stylus, leaving an invisible net of curvilinear fractures. These are brought to light through a dusting of graphite and pigment that settles into the paper's scarred skin and is followed by washes of graphite over the whole paper... As in many of Steinman's drawings, the result suggests the progress of a gentle, controlled 'calligrapher's' trance, summoned to steady and release the hand from conscious interference of the mind."

By reworking and rearranging his work several times, Steinman regards his image developments as slow, meditative panels that require penetration into their structure to become readable.

The Gallery is located at 8920 Melrose Avenue (at Almont Drive), West Hollywood. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., Saturdays 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and by appointment. For further information, please call the Gallery at 310-550-6792.
