Because they think its a good idea Magali Arriola A victim and a viewer: some thoughts on anticipated ruins We are pleased to announce the publication of Afterall issue 12, which focuses on five artists whose approach to art making has strong Romantic overtones. Patrick Caulfield, Trisha Donnelly, Boris Mikhailov, T.J. Wilcox and Cathy Wilkes produce artwork that is characterized by a sense of solitary longing, and framed by a deep knowledge of history and a recognition of its limits. Patrick Caulfields paintings of empty restaurants and full tables represent, like the wistful searches for continuity and narrative fidelity in T.J Wilcoxs short films, a pursuit for meaning in the form of an individual endeavour. Cathy Wilkess installations, in which she invokes personal and public histories, Trisha Donnellys melancholic attempts at telling tales through installations, drawings and performances and Boris Mikhailovs photographic investigation of the same issues, this time from the outside in, all are examples of artistic practices in which resolution is always deferred, and reflect a time when people seem to be unable to understand, or even recognize, their own desires. We were very sad to learn, upon completion of the issue, that Patrick Caulfield passed away on Friday 30 September at the age of 69. We hope the essays dedicated to his work function as a tribute. Afterall is a journal of contemporary art published twice a year in London and Los Angeles. In each issue the editors select five artists whose work we find compelling, with the idea that the juxtaposition of very different bodies of work adds to the interpretation and understanding of each practice.
