12.02Brian Sholis on the fair first

By 8PM Wednesday evening, the curators and collectors who turned out for the ABMB vernissage all had somewhere else to go. Many drifted over to the younger, mostly European galleries exhibiting in Art Positions, a section where dealers ply their wares in shipping containers on the beach; others crossed the causeway to attend the NADA preview; and the favored few headed off to Casa Casuarina (aka the old Versace place) for the second annual dinner hosted by dealers Barbara Gladstone, Shaun Caley Regen, and David Zwirner . . .

12.02Michael Wang on easy vice

Wednesday evening on Miami Beach kicked off with the revived New York Dolls playing their unmistakable brand of proto-punk on the beach, and the veteran band still looked the part. After their set, I beat the mass exodus and dashed to the new, hyper-chic Setai Hotel, where publisher Benedikt Taschen was hosting a launch party for David LaChapelle's book Artists and Prostitutes. Inside, all eyes were on LaChapelle's muse, robosexual tranny Amanda Lepore, who was perchednude of courseinside an illuminated plexiglass structure in the middle of the pool . . .

Perched in his crows nest above the pool at newbie fair Aqua Art Miami, Seattle's Greg Kucera was no longer lamenting his rejection from the main fair. He had sold a brand-new Deborah Butterfield sculpture within minutes of the opening bell, then a Bill Traylor ink-on-board for a hefty $28,000 . . .

12.05Linda Yablonsky on money talks

The standing-room-only crowd hung on every ho-hum word at the Richard Flood-hosted Philanthrophy panel featuring a lineup of heavyweights: Eli Broad, Patricia Cisneros, Howard Rachofsky, and David Rockefeller. The only surprise arrived with the realization that the first person to walk out was none other than dean of vanguard letters Alain Robbe-Grillet!
