You Think Im Superficial: Miguel Calderón
September 14-November 17, 2001
The Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art is proud to present
José
Antonio Hernández-Diez, the first major museum exhibition in the
United
States of work by this acclaimed Venezuelan artist. The exhibition is
organized by the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York and curated
by
Senior Curator Dan Cameron and Adjunct Curator Gerardo Mosquera. The
exhibit opens September 14 and runs through November 17, 2002. PBICA is
the first venue of a national tour.
One of the most important Latin American artists of the last decade,
Hernández-Diez creates candid, poetic, and at times disturbing and
irreverent multi-media installations inspired by the vernacular culture
and traditions of his home country.
The PBICA exhibition of Hernández-Diez will include 14 works created
between 1991 and 2000, chosen to convey several overlapping conceptual
axes that inform his work: technology and the body; marginality and
vernacular culture; myth making; and an intimate, spontaneous, and
enigmatic use of communication and industrial technologies.
EXCESS: Jessica Craig-Martin, Lucinda Devlin and Daniela Rossell,
three
photographers whose documentary-style photographs reveal details of our
pursuit of pleasure to the point of over-indulgence. Organized by PBICA
and curated by Sybillé Canthal and Jody Servon.
You Think Im Superficial, a three-part program that includes
twenty-five
video and underground film works from the late 60s to the present,
many
by Latino artists. Collectively, they offer a satirical survey of
contemporary culture with exaggerated characters, cheap fashion and rude
rock stars. In the PBICA New Media Lounge. Organized by PBICA, curated
by
Miguel Calderon and Sybillé Canthal.
Housed in a totally renovated 1939 Art Deco movie house on the Main
Street
of Lake Worth, Florida, the Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art is
devoted to the premise that contemporary art is a vital means of
understanding the world and todays culture. Since its opening in
2000,
PBICA has presented acclaimed exhibitions including, Making Time,
BROOKLYN!, Fred Tomaselli, Sue Williams and Video Jam. The ICA has
