Two exhibitions dedicated, respectively, to Francis Alÿs (Antwerp,
1959),
and to Giuseppe Caccavale (Afragola, 1960), open Thursday, November
28th,
at the Centro nazionale per le arti contemporanee in Rome.
The Francis Alÿs exhibition is organized by the Direzione generale per
larte e larchitettura contemporanee Centro nazionale per le
arti
contemporanee, in collaboration with the Kunsthaus Zurich and the Museo
Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (MNCARS) in Madrid. Rome is the
first
stop for the exhibitions European tour, which subsequently will
travel to
Zurich (February 28 May 11, 2003) and Madrid (May 28 August 18,
2003).
This is the first extensive solo exhibition of Giuseppe Caccavales
work
in an Italian museum.
This is the second pair of exhibitions in the series proposed by curator
Paolo Colombo, which began in September with side-by-side solo
exhibitions
dedicated to Eva Marisaldi and Michael Raedecker; the series will
continue
in 2003 with exhibitions of the work of Margherita Manzelli and Kara
Walker.
The Centers exhibition activities continue to be held in the spaces
of
the former Montello barracks on Via Guido Reni, where a new museum
facility, designed by Anglo-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, is scheduled to
open in 2005.
Francis Alÿs is exhibiting approximately forty paintings and
ninety
drawings, executed between 1992 and 2002, providing a complete and
representative view of her pictorial research. Making use of analogies,
comparisons and parallels, the artist juxtaposes themes that accumulate
and recur in our collective conscience. These include ideas such as the
liar, the prophet, and painting and punishment: human categories and
situations that the artist abstracts from reality and turns into small
paintings that narrate brief stories, anecdotes, and marginal gestures
that reconstruct and describe the psychological context of our
existence.
The publication that accompanies the exhibition is a book by the artist,
co-produced by the Centro nazionale per le arti contemporanee in Rome,
the
Kunsthaus Zurich, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia
(MNCARS). The book, published by Turner Libros, is edited by Catherine
Lampert, an independent curator and former director of the Whitechapel
Gallery in London; it is being printed in three monolingual versions:
Italian, English, and Spanish. The book will be presented for the first
time at the Centro nazionale, on January 15, 2003, at 6 p.m.
For his exhibition, Giuseppe Caccavale has designed a large
fresco (4 x 3
meters) that will be created on a movable frame. The artist also will
show
drawings on paper, executed in the spolvero (dust) technique
traditionally used to make preparatory drawings for frescoes; in
addition
he will exhibit three works on glass. Like Alÿs, Caccavale considers
observation and attention to the surrounding world and its details to be
essential, and he uses techniques of drawing and fresco to tell abstract
stories, represented with great manual skill.
The exhibition is accompanied by a book that functions as an annotation
to
the show; black and white photographs and color reproductions illustrate
the artists work, from design phase to final product,
Parallel to the two solo exhibitions, the Center is presenting a video
by
Alessandro Pessoli (Cervia, 1963), entitled Caligola
(Caligula,
1999-2002, DVD, color, 10 30, collection Centro nazionale per le
arti
contemporanee). This work, created from the animation of approximately
6,000 drawings, addresses ideas of evil, pleasure, and folly.
