Caldic Collection in Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum
November 23rd 2002 February 2nd 2003
'IMAGINE, YOU ARE STANDING HERE IN FRONT OF ME.'
The Caldic Collection of twentieth-century art, collected by Joop
van
Caldenborgh, characterised by its boldness, originality, diversity and
above all, quality, is attracting keen international interest. The
Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum is to present a major overview of this
unique collection.
This thematic exhibition has been put together by the Boijmans Van
Beuningen Museum and the Caldic Collection and will fill the Bodon wing,
the new sculpture frieze and part of the garden. The title of the
exhibition - 'IMAGINE, YOU ARE STANDING HERE IN FRONT OF ME' - is taken
from a work by Rémy Zaugg.
A key aspect of the exhibition is the interesting contrast between
abstract and figurative art, as expressed in the works of Jan
Schoonhoven
and Philip Akkerman, for instance. Schoonhoven's work is monochrome,
lucid
and almost scientific whilst Akkerman expresses his creativity in a well
nigh interminable series of figurative self portraits. A number of works
representing both artists have been acquired by the collection.
The exhibition will also focus on the 'made and found' images of nature
by
Anya Gallaccio, with her gracious work entitled 'Blessed' and works by
Ann
Veronica Janssens.
Photography will be another main theme, with a major overview of the
history of photography from Man Ray through to Rineke Dijkstra. A
special
feature will be the presence of historic and modern 'magic
boxes by
Joseph Cornell and Anish Kapoor.
Larger groups of work by a number of artists will be exhibited, such as
the complete graphic works of Marcel Broodthaers and work by Mona Hatoum
on a scale never before seen in the Netherlands. Large installations
from,
for instance Joseph Grigely and Sam Taylor-Wood, will be constructed for
the occasion. Taylor-Wood's work will be represented not just by a major
video installation but also the reconstruction of a photo portraiture in
the domestic environment. The exhibition also looks at interesting
historic loners in the collection, with works by Ad Reinhardt and Paul
Thek. Finally, a selection of outdoor sculptures will be displayed both
inside and outside the Museum, featuring artists such as Richard
Artschwager and Juan Muñoz. The exhibition will also show a range of
other
artists from Jeff Koons to Pyke Koch, Damian Hirst , Vibeke Tandberg,
Cerith Wyn Evans and Inez van Lamsweerde, not forgetting Richard Prince,
Cady Noland, Julian Opie, Richard Deacon and Ron Mueck.
The Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum has a long tradition of working
closely
with private collectors, a prime example being the recent exhibition and
publication entitled '150 Years of Boijmans Van Beuningen', which
concentrated on the links with major collectors in Rotterdam from the
distant past. And now we are working with the Caldic Collection.
The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive catalogue (published
by
NAI) with essays by Boris Groys and Sven Lütticken and an interview
with
the collector by Brooke Alexander.
