Printed Matter is very pleased to announce a book launch event for
Charley
02, on Saturday, November 9, 2002, from 4 to 6 PM. Printed Matter,
Inc. is
located at 535 West 22nd Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues.
Charley is a new publication series edited by Maurizio Cattelan,
Massimiliano Gioni, and Ali Subotnick and designed by the Purtill Family
Business. The first issue released in spring 2002 featured 400
emerging
artists from around the world, selected by a pool of international
artists, curators, critics and art professionals.
The second issue, Charley 02 is a snapshot of the New York City
art season
from fall 2001 through summer 2002. A pre-digested combine, Charley
02 is
a memory update that serves as both a play list and a Whos Who of
contemporary art. The new issue treats New York City as a giant, open
air
festival of contemporary art: Charley 02 is a catalogue of this
imaginary
show that unravels in the streets of New York, stretching from Harlem to
Chelsea, SoHo, Queens, and Brooklyn.
Unlike a traditional reference book, Charley 02 is open to
endless
transformations: constructed as a collection of 142 color postcards
featuring images from the seasons most memorable shows and events
along
with texts, comments and reviews, Charley 02 can be shuffled
around and
rearranged. Charleys postcards can be sent out, pasted to the
wall, or
glued to the fridge; hierarchies can be shifted, new connections
created.
Charley 02 is a machine for distribution, a mechanism for
spreading and
exploiting information, rumors, and communication. Return to the
futureremember tomorrow. Charley is a multiform creature,
bound to
transform at each new appearance and new issue. Charley is
powered by the
Deste Foundation for Contemporary Art in Athens, Greece, which sponsors
artist's projects, exhibitions, and symposia that explore the
relationship
between contemporary art and culture. Since its founding by Dakis
Joannou
in 1983, Deste has organized more than thirty exhibitions and projects.
Charley is published by Les Presses du Réel, Dijon, France.
Paperback, 142
pages. ISBN: 1-56466-100-8. Distributed in Europe by Idea Books.
Distributed in the US by D.A.P. $15.
Charley, and over 24,000 other titles, is available from Printed
