Book Signing for Richard Tuttle's
Memento/cENTER
at Printed Matter, Inc.
Saturday, November 2, 2002, 5 to 7 PM
Printed Matter is very pleased to announce a book signing event for
Richard Tuttle's book, Richard Tuttle: Memento/center, on
Saturday,
November 2, 2002, from 5 to 7 PM. Printed Matter, Inc. is located at 535
West 22nd Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues.
Over the last four decades, Richard Tuttle has challenged the boundaries
and frameworks for making and experiencing art while amplifying our
understanding and perception of time and space in an ever-changing
universe. In works that, since the 1960s have defied conventional
categories of painting, drawing and sculpture and since the 1980s have
exploded in a profusion of form, color and scale, Tuttle has broken down
the barriers separating a work from its surrounding space-literally and
philosophically expanding the parameters of art to embrace life.
Richard Tuttle: Memento/center was published on the occasion of
two recent
exhibitions on the artist's work curated by Susan Harris that took place
in the summer of 2002. Tuttle's work was presented in Memento at
the Museu
de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves in Porto, Portugal and in
center at the
Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea in Santiago de Compostela Spain.
While
the exhibitions were conceived autonomously for these two museums in
neighboring cities and countries, Tuttle, nevertheless, envisioned them
as
complimentary components of a larger, if intangible whole and, in the
process, expanded further the parameters within which he has been
creating
and through which the viewer approaches his art.
This large-scale [15 1/4 x 15 1/4 inch] book functions both as an
exhibition catalogue with tipped-in installation photographs and essays
-
which are tri-lingual in Portuguese, Spanish, and English - by Miguel
Fernández-Cid / Vincente Todolí, Susan Harris, José A. Bragança
de
Miranda, David Platzker, and Eduardo Lago as well as an vital artists'
publication interspersed with interventions and texts by Tuttle.
Richard Tuttle: Memento/center was co-published by Museu de Arte
Contemporânea de Serralves, Porto, Portugal and Centro Galego de Arte
Contemporánea, Santiago de Compostela, Spain.114 pages, hardback,
edition
of 1000 copies, ISBN: Paper: 972-739-100-1 / 84-453-3355-0, and is
