LOS ANGELES— The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) has announced the launch of Errata Erratum by New York artist and musician Paul D. Miller on moca.org. The work is commissioned by MOCA and is part of an ongoing series of artists’ projects.

Based on the work of artist Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), Errata Erratum features audio remixes of Duchamp’s Errata Musicale and his lecture “The Creative Act,” which was given at Rice University in Houston in 1957, combined with visual animations of Duchamp’s rotoreliefs and disc-shaped graffiti tags by Miller himself.

Part homage, part critique, Errata Erratum examines ideas of circularity, rotation, repetition, looping, and strategic selection by allowing the viewer to create an original “remix” by manipulating the both audio and visual elements through a control panel. Inspired by Duchamp’s concept of “musical sculpture,” Miller integrates the concept of mixing sound as a form of sculpture, based on contemporary art forms such as hip-hop and dub reggae.

Paul D. Miller is a New York-based conceptual artist, writer, and musician whose artworks have appeared in the Whitney Biennial, The Venice Biennial for Architecture, and the Ludwig Museum in Cologne. He is perhaps best known as Dj Spooky that Subliminal Kid, a constructed persona who uses a variety of digitally created music as a form of postmodern sculpture. He has recorded a significant volume of music and collaborated with a variety of pre-eminent musicians and composers, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kool Keith (a.k.a. Doctor Octagon), Yoko Ono, and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth.

The project can be seen on http://www.moca.o rg/museum/digital_gallery.php

This project has been made possible by the generous support of The James Irvine Foundation.
