The political landscape of Eastern and Central Europe has changed radically over the past decade. How have these changes influenced art in the region? Has art helped reshape cultural identities?

This symposium will explore the historical, political, and artistic contexts surrounding art in Eastern European countries. Panelists include prominent cultural historians, an artist and a curator, all of whose writings appear in The Museum of Modern Art’s new publication Primary Documents: A Sourcebook for Eastern and Central European Art since the 1950s. The first English-language collection of documents on modern art drawn directly from the artistic archives of Eastern and Central Europe, this important volume serves as an introduction to the region’s major artistic and critical movements from the latter half of the twentieth century.

The panel discussion is made possible by The Trust for Mutual Understanding, The Jo Carole and Ronald S. Lauder Travel Fund for Central and Eastern Europe, and The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art, and is organized by the International Program and the Department of Education of The Museum of Modern Art.

Tickets are $7, $5 members, $3 students, and are available at the MoMA QNS Lobby Ticketing Desk, 33 Street at Queens Boulevard; The MoMA Design Stores, 44 West 53 Street and 81 Spring Street; and at the door on the night of the event. Tickets can be used as same-value vouchers when purchasing the publication at the event.
