SLAVOJ ZIZEK lecture: “LOVE WITHOUT MERCY”

MONDAY, MARCH 10th, 2003, 7:00pm (Free admission)

At DEITCH PROJECTS, 18 WOOSTER STREET (between Canal & Grand),
NEW YORK, NY 10013

Slavoj Zizek, the world-renowned philosopher and cultural theorist, will be holding his regular, biannual town meeting in New York City on March 10th at Deitch Projects (18 Wooster Street) in conjunction with the publication of Lacanian Ink 21. The subject of his lecture this time is “Love without Mercy.”

“Perhaps, there is no greater love than that of a revolutionary couple,” writes Zizek, “where each of the two lovers is ready to abandon the other at any moment if revolution demands it. It is along these lines that one should look for the non-perverse reading of Christ’s sacrifice, of his message to Judas: ‘Prove to me that I am everything to you, SO BETRAY ME on behalf of the revolutionary mission of both of us!’” Zizek, the ever prolific writer, will expound on this theme and, as always, apply his dazzling thinking to current events and any number of other issues in a question-and-answer session after the lecture. Josefina Ayerza, the editor and publisher of Lacanian Ink, will read an introductory paper.

“The thrill of reading Zizek,” says Robert Boynton in Lingua Franca, “arises in part from the collision between the insanity he finds everywhere in our psychic and social lives and the rigorous clarity with which he anatomizes its workings.”

Slavoj Zizek is Senior Researcher at the Institute of Social Studies, University of Ljubljana. Some of his recent books include, The Fragile Absolute – or, why is the Christian legacy worth fighting for? (2000), On Belief (2001), and Welcome to the Desert of the Real: Five Essays on September 11th and Releated Dates (2002).

Lacanian Ink is cultural magazine which focuses on the teachings of French psychoanalyst, Jacques Lacan. It is published biannually in New York.

Foundation 20 21 is a New York based arts organization and collecting entity, an outgrowth of Thread Waxing Space, with a mission to nourish exchanges among artists, writers, filmmakers, historians and philosophers as well as to present to a wider audience some of the most arresting work being produced in our increasingly complex visual culture. While assembling an art collection with an aim to build bridges between key developments in 20th and 21st Century art, Foundation 20 21 will mount occasional exhibitions of overlooked or forgotten work from the past in order to bring to light its relevance to our times. Shows of recent acquisitions, unusual publishing projects, artist presentations, lectures, film and video screenings will also be part of the program.
