The following two program series are presented concurrently with the
Guggenheim exhibition "Matthew Barney: The Cremaster Cycle" ( February
21
- June 11).
SCULPTURAL VIEWS
Cultural historians, artists, and curators discuss the interdisciplinary
role of sculpture in art today with particular reference to "Matthew
Barney: The Cremaster Cycle". Nancy Spector, Curator of Contemporary
Art
at the Guggenheim Museum, moderates.
Cremaster 3: The Process of Making
Saturday, February 22, 3 pm
A dialogue with the team that made Matthew Barney's Cremaster cycle
possible. Panelists: Gabe Bartalos, Prosthetic Makeup and Special
Effects
Specialist; Linda LaBelle, Costume Designer, Weaver, and Fiber-Expert;
Matt Wallin, Digital Effects Specialist; Matthew Ryle, Sculpture
Fabricator, and Chelsea Romersa, Associate Producer.
Performance and the Object
Tuesday, March 25, 6:30 pm
Barney describes his entire practice - which includes performance, film,
and installation as sculptural. The relationships between these genres
will be discussed. Panelists: Thyrza Nichols Goodeve, Critic; Amelia
Jones, Art Historian and Critic; Frazer Ward, Art Historian, Critic, and
Assistant Professor of Art at Smith College; and Jens Hoffmann, Writer
and
Curator.
Narrative Sculpture and Sculptural Narratives
Tuesday, April 8, 6:30 pm
Barney's Cremaster cycle sculptures share a common link in that they are
derived from the multi-layered narratives of the project as a whole.
Panelists discuss how contemporary art incorporates narrative and
fantasy.
Panelists: Richard Flood, Chief Curator, Walker Art Center; Molly
Nesbit,
Professor, Vassar College; and Louis Neri, independent Writer and
Curator.
