SWITCH – on reversibility

SWITCH is oriented towards the principle of reversibility. What seems
very
simple and immediate gets an unexpected meaning that sometimes can be
quite the contrary of the first impression that we have of an artwork.
In
this sense the exhibition on the one hand removes itself from an
exaggerated, documentary focus within contemporary art and on the other
hand it builds forth on the achievements of this tendency. Some works
may
at first appear to be purely documentary, but added notions of fear,
power, beauty and a critical view on society, reveal a different
approach.
The so called “Butterfly Effect”, that was first described
by the
meteorologist and mathematician Edward Lorenz, in this sense certainly
is
an important influence. He discovered that the predictability of the
weather is not directly proportional to the amount of collected
information. He expressed the degree of unpredictability in his
statement
that a butterfly that flutters its wings could cause a tornado on the
other side of the world.

In answer to an exhibition that looks for contemporary metaphors and
symbols, a selection is made of some paintings and sculptures from the
museums collection that in their time had a very clear metaphorical
meaning. Modernistic aesthetics taught us to look at art in a
meaningless
way. Today we try once more to conjure up the context, the
representation
and the story behind artworks. This focus exhibition invites the visitor
to ask himself whether the selected works still have a deeper meaning
and
which metaphorical or symbolical language they speak.
