S.M.A.K. is looking for a new artistic director
S.M.A.K.
S.M.A.K., in the Belgian city of Ghent, is a museum of contemporary art
with an international reputation. Its extensive collection brings
together
works by leading Belgian and international artists. Its exhibition
policy
is one of innovation and dynamism.
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
The new artistic director will run the museum, be responsible for the
exhibition programme and consolidate and expand the collection. The new
artistic director will succeed Mr. Jan Hoet.
The requirements for candidacy
The artistic director has a broad personal vision regarding developments
in international contemporary art, international developments regarding
the instruments for the support of this art and international
developments
related to the function of institutes such as the S.M.A.K.
- at least five years’ experience in a managerial function in an
organisation or projects involving international contemporary art
- at least five years’ experience in organising exhibitions of
international contemporary art
- a broad personal vision of international art developments and museum
policy
- good management skills (talent for organisation, leadership and
motivating people)
- good communication skills, both internal and external (press,
authorities, public forum, sponsors, international art world)
- university graduate (preferably Art History)
- fluent English and excellent knowledge of Dutch (or the readiness to
acquire a knowledge of Dutch within one year of appointment)
- passive knowledge of French and German
Procedure
A pre-selection will be made partly on the basis of a career review, the
final selection will be made based on an interview with an international
artistic jury and an advisory committee. The jury consists of Dirk
Schutyser (Chairman of ‘the Friends’), Jan Hoet, Svenga
Badovinac, Tuula
Karjalainen, Harald Szeeman, Mario Pieroni and Lars Nittve.
The position will be contractually filled for a renewable term of 6
years.
