The 47th Anual de Arte FAAP—the students’ traditional visual arts exhibition, considered a reference in contemporary production—will open on November 23rd at Salão Cultural of the Museu de Arte Brasileira MAB-FAAP (Museum of Brazilian Arts) in São Paulo.
Since 1964, the Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado FAAP has hosted this annual art show, exhibiting the visual production of its students. It is one of the most traditional and long-standing contemporary art exhibitions in the city of São Paulo but retains a national projection and range. The show brings together artworks from different media, selected by a committee composed of four professionals who play a leading role in the art scene, including artists, researchers, critics, curators and lecturers at FAAP’s Visual Arts Course.
According to Professor Marcos Moraes, the course coordinator, “This initiative seeks, amongst others, to expand and maximise the impact of our artist training. The opportunity to take part in the exhibition offers to our students the chance to get closer to the strategies, agents and events of the art system by offering them the opportunity to experience all stages of an exhibition process, from registration and selection to awarding, not to mention the creative potential unleashed by the perspective coming from the public—the external gaze.”
Therefore, a cycle is closed: the Foundation’s main objective in hosting the show is to encourage its students’ artistic production and create a space of reflection for new ideas and perceptions on art by using education as a tool and interface. It also expands this field of experience beyond “academic walls,” reinserting it into the relationship with a broad and diverse audience.
A consecrated space of reflection and discussion on contemporary production, the Anual de Arte Show also holds a parallel programme: talks, meetings and the edition of a catalogue. All the activities are open to the public.
Guest artists
Inviting artists to the Anual de Arte Show since 1999 is an initiative that has been consolidated at every new edition. Since 2009, the guest artists are those who participated in the residency programme that FAAP holds with Cité des Arts in Paris.
This program is a result of an agreement between FAAP and Cité des Arts since 1997. After 19 years, it continues to provide artists seeking differentiated time and space the conditions for their creation to have a privileged place to work.
Within the Anual de Arte, works of two guest artists—Rodrigo Sassi and Ulysses Boscolo, both from this FAAP’s Artistic Residence program—will be shown. The public will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the artists’ research and creation processes through a selection of references and materials that resulted in the works produced during their stay at the Residence.
According to Moraes, “The strategy of inviting an artist who has links to FAAP expands the opportunity for potential dialogues between the students’ productions with those of established artists. Their presence in the exhibition broadens the potential relationships between the different contexts of artistic production, and strengthens the link to FAAP’s Visual Arts Course.”
Awards
The Awards Committee—composed of three top professionals in the field of visual arts with national and international projection—grants annual scholarships for the seven first selected students: three 90% fee discount prizes, two 75% and another two with 60% discount.
Visual Arts Course—FAAP
Created in the mid-1950s, the Visual Arts Course is recognised as a benchmark in the field—gathers a significant sample of Brazilian artists and theorists in the visual arts field, who were students or lectures at this institution. Currently, the course trains professionals in the field of visual arts, artists, researchers and other individuals engaged with the art world. Over the decades, FAAP has established itself as a reference in research and artistic production, especially in the contemporary art scene both nationally and internationally.
