Art and Special Education Symposium
“Art as a Refuge: Creating a Safe Space for Underserved Populations”
Saturday, November 7, 2015, 9am–3:30pm
Presented by Moore’s MA in Art Education with an Emphasis in Special Populations

Always a highly anticipated fall event, this year’s Art and Special Education Symposium features two highly esteemed educators who will share their insights into how art can help to establish spaces where young people feel safe and are free to express themselves. The day will also include morning refreshments, lunch and hands-on workshops, providing educators with “takeaways” that can be incorporated into their teaching methods. Debi West has been teaching children through the visual arts for 22 years at both the elementary and secondary levels. Her “CPR” approach to resuscitating our teaching passion is infused in her “Art with Purpose” curriculum, which is steeped in service learning collaborations that help students understand how their art can benefit others and become a tool for their own personal healing. Dr. Donalyn Heise’s research focuses on art for underserved populations, art and resilience, and community art collaborations. She was contributing author to Intersections of Art and Special Education: Exemplary Programs and Approaches (2013) and is currently co-editor for Art Education: Gateway to Learning for Children in Trauma.
