About the artist
Jeff Wall was born in Vancouver, where he lives and works, in 1946. He has exhibited his photographs internationally for the past 35 years. His pictures, in both black and white and colour, are usually large in scale and done in collaboration with performers. He calls them “cinematographic.” He is considered to be one of the artists who has led the way in emphasizing the affinities between photography, painting, and cinema. His work is included in many major public and private collections including the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He taught art in universities in Canada for twenty-five years, and his critical writing has been collected and published in several languages. He has been awarded several prizes, including the Hasselblad Award for Photography in 2002 and the Roswitha Haftmann Prize in 2003.

About The Domain of the Great Bear
The Domain of the Great Bear is the research platform of the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm—a series of public lectures, workshops and events focusing on art and production and the changing nature of conditions for that production to address the challenges and aspirations for anyone claiming the category of artist. Sourcing the title of the series from the 1966 canonical layout by Mel Bochner and Robert Smithson, the platform pays homage to Bochner’s wish, at that time, “to expand the range of philosophical, psychological, political and visual ideas that one’s work could engage.”

The Domain of the Great Bear serves as KKH’s will as an institution to plant within the public domain a set of attitudes about art, architecture, knowledge and culture that extend from historicity forwards, and visa versa—forwards, backwards—to serve as a larger conversation piece about anything that claims itself as or beyond the art world.

Upcoming in The Domain of the Great Bear is the architect and urbanist Kunle Adeyemi on Tuesday, 24 March 2015 at 16h.
