Tenure-track or tenured professors of Art and Technology, New Genres, and Photography to begin fall 2015
San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) seeks to hire three full-time faculty, one each in Art and Technology, New Genres, and Photography. Artists with exemplary exhibition records and prominent recognition in their fields, as well as dedicated teaching histories, are sought for these positions. Rank is open; appointment can be at the Assistant, Associate Professor, or Full Professor level, commensurate with experience. These positions require an MFA degree and a minimum of three years’ teaching experience at the college level or equivalent professional experience.
Candidates for these teaching positions must be prepared to instruct students at all levels—beginning to advanced BFA, and MFA—in required courses as well as electives. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach to a diverse student body and whose own interests, knowledge, and practice draw from a wide and interdisciplinary range of artists and works.
About the programs
Insistently interdisciplinary, Art and Technology at SFAI connects technology to such traditional approaches to art making as painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, film, video, installation, and performance.
New Genres at SFAI transcends specific art forms and is inherently cross-disciplinary and category-defying. The artist’s concepts, intentions, and questions are the art medium and the work itself.
SFAI approaches Photography as a conceptual tool, a way to construct narrative, a means to document the world. SFAI is home to the first “fine art” photography program in the country, founded by Ansel Adams in 1946.
Tenure-track or tenured professor of History and Theory of Contemporary Art to begin fall 2015
SFAI seeks a scholar with specialization in modern and/or contemporary art history for a full-time faculty position. Rank is open; appointment can be at the Assistant, Associate Professor, or Full Professor level, commensurate with experience. This position requires the PhD degree and a minimum of three years’ experience teaching art history at the college level, or equivalent professional experience.
Courses to be taught include core art history curriculum requirements for all BFA and MFA students; upper-level electives on topics relevant to contemporary artists including critical theory; and degree-specific courses for students in the following programs: BA in History and Theory of Contemporary Art, MA in History and Theory of Contemporary Art, and MA in Exhibition and Museum Studies. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach to a diverse student body and whose own interests, knowledge, and research draw from a wide and interdisciplinary range of theories, movements, and artistic modes.
