Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts presents The Way Out: MFA 2014 from May 22 to 24 at Rogue Space | Chelsea, 526 West 26th Street, 9E–9F, New York City. Gallery hours are 10am–6pm daily. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 22, from 6 to 8pm.
Exhibiting artists include Rebecca Alosio, David Bonagurio, Evan Bujold, Lauren Comly, Jacob Crook, Emily Dunlap, Leah Edelman-Brier, Jim Gallagher, Tian Guan, Lana Hijazi, Ben Jackson, Cayla Lockwood, Kyu Park, Sarah Pfohl, Victor Rivera, Deborah Roberts, Endam Nihan Tasbasi, Robert Weiss, Davana Wilkins, Renqian Yang, and Zaoli Zhong.
SU’s annual MFA exhibition includes artists working in a variety of traditional and cross-disciplinary media, including painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, film, site-specific installation and performance. What sets the artists in The Way Out apart is the reinterpretation of traditional media into a contemporary context. Painting and drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and film—all familiar instruments in the foundation of art making—have been introduced in a fresh milieu of concept and craft. Oil on canvas partnered with documentary video, works on paper that combine printmaking, drawing, and painting, and site-specific installations of ceramic sculpture and photography. They are fused with both familiar and previously unexplored concepts that range from notions of gender, family, and place to abstract narratives and sensory interaction.
