The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) launches its curatorial opportunities beginning in fall 2014. The opportunities include a Curatorial Internship program and the Emerging Curator program.

As an international research centre and museum, the CCA is a laboratory for the exploration of key issues affecting contemporary architecture and its social and cultural context. Now celebrating twenty-five years, the CCA conceives and hosts an extensive program of exhibitions, research opportunities, curatorial programs, publications and public events that establish links between its vast collection, contemporary architectural practice and social change.

Aiming to continuously rethink and re-examine the scope and the boundaries of “curating architecture,” the CCA solicits applications that will contribute to innovating curatorial approaches. The initiative aims to reinforce the CCA’s expertise and leadership in architectural curatorial practice. By hosting these programs for the fourth year, the CCA recognizes curatorial practice as an emerging critical component of the architectural profession and a complement to academic programs.

The Emerging Curator program offers the opportunity to propose and curate a project at the CCA related to the contemporary debate in architecture, urban issues, landscape design, and cultural and social dynamics. Architects, journalists, designers, critics, historians, photographers, artists, etc. born on or after the 1st of January 1979 are eligible for this program. The program is to be developed during a residency of three months at the CCA that should take place between September 2014 and May 2015 and can be divided into several sessions.

The CCA encourages a wide range of proposals and curatorial projects with a broad scope (such as a physical or virtual exhibition, editorial projects, seminars and research colloquiums, a series of public events, workshops, etc.). Proposals must introduce an innovative curatorial approach contributing to the contemporary discourse on architecture. Projects based on the CCA collection are welcome. Interdisciplinary and collaborative practices are encouraged.

The selected candidate will become acquainted with the CCA’s institutional knowledge and vision, explore the institution’s resources and the collection holdings, and apply her/his curatorial direction to develop the proposed project. The CCA will provide assistance and support towards its realization in accordance to the curatorial guidelines of the institution.

The recipient will receive a maximum of 10,000 CAD to cover travel, housing, and living expenses for a period of up to three months in Montreal (subject to the income tax laws of Canada and Québec). The scope of the project and specific timing of the residency will be determined in consultation with the CCA.

The Curatorial Internship program is designed to share the CCA’s expertise with students and young professionals in architecture, the design disciplines, arts, and humanities, who are committed to exploring the editorial and curatorial fields in architecture. Students and young professionals, born on or after the 1st of January 1984 are eligible for this program.

Selected candidates will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the CCA’s curatorial approach and to work closely with the CCA curatorial team in the development of current projects—including exhibitions, collection acquisitions, publications and research programs—through a six-to-nine-month internship beginning fall 2014.

The program provides a monthly stipend of 2,000 CAD over a period of six to nine months, calculated to defray costs of living in Montreal. The length of individual internships will be determined in accordance with institutional strategies. The languages in use at the CCA are English and French.

The CCA Curatorial Opportunities receive the generous support of the Power Corporation of Canada.
